EV road trip
Blue Ridge Parkway in an EV
The Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee/Asheville, NC to Waynesboro, VA at the gateway to Shenandoah is the longest scenic byway in America — 469 miles of ridge-line driving with no traffic lights and no commercial development. Done right in an EV, it's the most rewarding East Coast road trip. Charging is at the towns adjacent to the parkway, not on it.
Quick facts
- · Length: 469 miles
- · Recommended pace: 5-7 days minimum
- · Best season: Mid-October (peak fall color) or May (rhododendron bloom)
- · Speed limit: 45 mph max — it's a true scenic drive
- · Difficulty: Easy. The hardest part is patience.
The route has zero charging on the parkway itself
The Blue Ridge Parkway is intentionally non-commercial — no gas stations, no restaurants, no chargers. You exit the parkway into adjacent towns to charge. The good news: at the right milepost intervals, towns exist within 5-10 miles of the parkway with charging.
The other consideration: the parkway has elevation changes between 600 ft and 6,000+ ft (Mt. Mitchell area). Expect 15-25% less real-world range than EPA estimates due to climbs and elevation, partially recovered through regen on descents.

| Lexington, VA | 63 | DCFC + L2 at major hotels |
| Waynesboro, VA (north end) | 0 | Gateway to Shenandoah; DCFC + multiple hotels |

Mid-October peak color season turns the Blue Ridge Parkway into a slow-moving parking lot. Hotels in Asheville, Boone, and Roanoke sell out 6-12 months in advance for the prime weekends. Two strategies that work:
- · Mid-week trips: Tuesday-Thursday drives are ~50% less crowded than weekends and book later
- · Off-peak weeks: The first week of October or last week of October has 70% of the color with 30% of the crowds
Best vehicles for this trip
- · Tesla Model Y Long Range — multiple Superchargers along the route make this stress-free
- · Hyundai Ioniq 5 — 800V charging speeds keep stops short
- · Mach-E — fits the highway driving style and Ford service network is excellent in this region
- · Lucid Air — overkill for this trip but you'll appreciate the comfort and range
