Used EV picks

Best used EVs under $25,000 in 2026

The used EV market took a hammering in 2023–2024, and most of those discounts have stuck. In 2026, $25k buys you a real EV with hundreds of miles of warranty left and usable range — and even with the federal used EV credit gone, these are still the highest-value EVs on the market right now.

Heads up: federal used EV credit ended Sept 30, 2025

The $4,000 federal used EV credit (IRC §25E) sunset under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. If you bought a qualifying used EV before September 30, 2025, you can still claim it on your 2025 return. For 2026 purchases, it's gone.

What's still on the table: state credits, utility rebates on home Level 2 chargers ($500–$1,500), the federal home charger install credit (30% up to $1,000 through June 30, 2026), and the new federal auto loan interest deduction (up to $10,000/yr deductible interest on personal-use vehicle loans).

The picks

Tesla Model 3 (Standard Range / Standard Range Plus)

2019–2022

The market's reset hard. 2019–2022 SR+ models routinely sell at $19–24k now. 250+ mile real-world range, Supercharger network access, dirt-cheap maintenance. The single best used EV deal in 2026.

Watch for: MCU1 cars (pre-mid-2021) had an embedded flash chip that fails — Tesla will replace, but check service history. Avoid battery heater issues on early 2018 cars.

Chevy Bolt EUV

2022–2023

Roomier than the original Bolt, 247-mile range, slow DC fast charging (~55 kW peak) is the real downside. Often $18–22k used. Plenty of warranty left on battery.

Watch for: All recalled batteries should have been replaced by now — confirm via VIN check with Chevy that the recall is closed. Replacement batteries reset the warranty clock.

Nissan Leaf Plus (62 kWh)

2019–2022

The Plus trim with the bigger battery is the only Leaf worth considering. 215 miles real-world range. CHAdeMO fast charging is dying, so this is a city / commuter car only.

Watch for: Air-cooled battery means hot-climate cars (Phoenix, Texas) lose capacity faster. Pull a battery health report before buying — Recurrent or LeafSpy.

Hyundai Kona Electric

2021–2023

258-mile range, peppy, real-world efficient. Often sneaks under $20k in 2026. A great commuter car for someone who doesn't need much space.

Watch for: Pre-2021 cars had a battery recall — should be remedied, but confirm via VIN. Backseat is tight.

Ford Mustang Mach-E (Select / Premium RWD)

2021–2022

Some 2021 base trims now sneaking under $25k. ~230 miles real-world range. Now with Supercharger access via NACS adapter.

Watch for: Early cars had software issues (charge port not opening, infotainment crashes) — should be fixed via OTA, but confirm dealer brought the car current.

Volkswagen ID.4 (RWD First Edition / Pro)

2021–2022

Depreciated hard. 250-mile range, real-world okay. Software was rough at launch but has been patched. $20–24k territory now.

Watch for: Early infotainment was painfully slow — software updates have helped a lot, but test-drive specifically the screen responsiveness before buying.

Always get a battery health report

A used EV's value is mostly in the battery, and battery condition varies dramatically even between identical model years. A 4-year-old Tesla Model 3 can have anywhere from 88% to 96% of original capacity depending on how it was driven and charged. The difference is the difference between a great deal and a $4,000 mistake.

Services like Recurrent Auto pull battery health data from the car's diagnostic port and produce a vehicle-specific report (similar to a Carfax for the battery). $50 well spent before buying any used EV.
