EVQuizCan an EV make it?

EV road trip

Southern Utah's Mighty Five in an EV

Zion → Bryce Canyon → Capitol Reef → Arches → Canyonlands. The classic Mighty Five loop is genuinely doable in an EV in 2026 — but it requires planning. Charging infrastructure has filled in dramatically since 2022, but gaps still exist between the parks. This is more EV-experienced territory than LA-Vegas or PCH.

Quick facts

The honest charging picture by park

Zion National Park (Springdale, UT)

Springdale (gateway) has solid charging now. Tesla SC at Best Western Plus Zion Canyon Inn; Electrify America at Best Western Zion Park; multiple L2 chargers at lodges. Inside the park itself there's L2 at Zion Lodge.

Bryce Canyon (Bryce, UT)

Bryce Canyon Lodge has L2 charging. Ruby's Inn (just outside) has Tesla SC + Electrify America. Rural enough that you should arrive with 60%+ battery and plan to overnight to fully charge.

Capitol Reef (Torrey, UT)

This is the charging-thin park. Capitol Reef Resort in Torrey has L2 for guests. No fast charging within 60+ miles. Arrive with 70%+ and plan to overnight-charge before the next leg.

Arches + Canyonlands (Moab, UT)

Moab is well-charged now. Tesla SC at Moab Springs Ranch; Electrify America at the Visitor Center; multiple L2 at major hotels. Both Arches and Island in the Sky (Canyonlands) sections are easy from a Moab base.

The Hwy 12 / Hwy 24 gap (the real planning concern)

Bryce → Capitol Reef → Moab via UT-12 and UT-24 is one of the most scenic drives in America AND has the thinnest charging infrastructure in the loop. About 240 miles between Bryce and Moab with charging only at Torrey (Capitol Reef gateway).

Strategy: Bryce → Torrey overnight (charge to 100%) → Torrey → Moab next day with a midday stop at Hanksville (one DC fast charger, verify on PlugShare before you arrive). For sub-300-mile-range EVs this is the trip's pinch point.

Where to stay

Each park gateway has hotels with L2 charging for guests. Book ahead — these sell out months in advance during peak season.

Best vehicles for this trip

Not recommended: sub-280-mile-range EVs. The Hwy 12/24 gap will stress you out. If you have a Bolt EUV or base Mach-E, take this trip in a rental instead.
