New Jersey EV guide

Best EVs in New Jersey for 2026

New Jersey has one of the most underrated EV incentive stacks in the country. The Charge Up NJ program is worth up to $4,000 at point of sale, AND New Jersey gives EVs a full sales-tax exemption — meaning you don't pay the 6.625% sales tax that would otherwise add ~$2,600 to a $40k car. Combined with manufacturer cash discounts of $7,500–$10,000, a Garden State buyer can stack over $14,000 in effective discount on the right vehicle. (Federal $7,500 EV credit ended Sept 30, 2025 — most OEMs now offer comparable cash on the hood.)

Charging coverage is dense. The Turnpike and Parkway both have well-spaced Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America stations. Most major shopping centers have at least L2 charging now.

Top picks for New Jersey

Picked for New Jersey's climate, terrain, and the cars you'll actually see on dealer lots.

Climate considerations

New Jersey winters are real but not extreme. Expect 18–25% range loss on the coldest weeks. Coastal South Jersey (Cape May, Atlantic City, the LBI area) gets milder winters than North Jersey. Heat-pump-equipped models (Tesla, Hyundai/Kia, newer Mach-Es) lose less.

Summer humidity is the underrated factor — AC runs hard, range drops 5–8% on the hottest days. Not a problem; just plan around it.

Charging in New Jersey

Multi-family / apartment charging: NJ has been particularly aggressive at requiring EV charging in new multi-family construction. Many newer apartment complexes in Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, and the Princeton/ Edison/Plainsboro corridor have garage charging. If you're apartment-hunting and planning an EV, ask before signing.

PSE&G and JCP&L both offer EV-specific time-of-use rate plans. PSE&G's "EV Whole House" plan can drop overnight charging to about $0.09/kWh. Worth a call the day you take delivery.

Highway charging: NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, I-78, I-80 all have good fast-charging coverage. Atlantic City Expressway has Tesla Superchargers at several service plazas now. Getting to the Pine Barrens or deep South Jersey still requires more planning.
