Houston to Big Bend National Park
"Can an EV make it to Big Bend National Park?"
DO NOT ATTEMPT in a current-generation EV. 580 mi each way through a genuine West Texas charging desert. Big Bend itself has NO fast charging. Even with careful planning you risk getting stranded.
Minimum recommended real-world range: 400 miles
We graded this EV-HOSTILE because it's the kind of trip that gives EV road-trippers the horror stories that scare everyone else off. Big Bend National Park is in the most remote, least-charged region of the continental US. Between San Antonio and El Paso there are vast stretches with no fast charging. Big Bend itself has zero fast chargers — the closest is in Marathon, TX, 70 miles from the park entrance. Until West Texas gets the federal NEVI charging buildout completed (currently slated for 2027-2028), this trip is a no.
The route + charging
| Stop | Mile | Role | Charging |
|---|---|---|---|
| Houston (start) | 0 | anchor | Dense Tesla SC + EA across metro |
| San Antonio | 200 | stop | Multiple Tesla SC + EA |
| Junction, TX | 320 | stop | Tesla SC + EA — last truly dense charging |
| Fort Stockton | 450 | stop | EA only; verify before depending on it |
| Marathon, TX Closest charging to Big Bend's north entrance | 550 | stop | Limited L2 at hotels; NO fast charging |
| Big Bend NP | 620 | destination | NO CHARGING IN PARK — 50+ miles between any chargers |
| Return same route | 1180 | anchor | Same risks both directions |
Best vehicles for this trip
- Don't bring an EV at all
Honest answer: rent a gas vehicle, save the EV for trips with infrastructure. We say this because we want EVs to succeed — bad EV road trip stories set the whole category back.
Things to actually do
- · Big Bend National Park (in a gas car for now)
- · Marfa, TX art scene (gas car)
- · Terlingua ghost town (gas car)
- · Rio Grande river boat tours (gas car)
- · Wait for the NEVI corridor buildout to complete (2027-2028) — then we'll re-rate this trip
Seasonal reality
Whenever the charging infrastructure gets built — currently scheduled for 2027-2028 under the federal NEVI program. Until then this trip is EV-hostile in any season.
